I thought the open top nuts were locks at first. They are randomly spread over all 4 wheels

That’s what happens when you get the ol’ swollen nuts and the chrome caps need to be pulled off so you can get the lugnuts on or off the car.

That is ghetto. Aren’t the proper lug nuts covered to prevent water intrusion?

Yeah, they have a stupid chrome cover that swells up and/or gets ripped off.

Yeah I got that line at a tire place once, many years ago and thought they were BSing me, until I went to pull a wheel off and the socket would only fit a couple of the lugs. But I ended up peeling the chrome cap off and all was well. I’ve seen it a bunch of times since then on cars we work on and sometimes you have to hammer a socket on to get the lugnuts off. Good times.

A lot of them have chrome caps that are slid over the lug nut, but it’s tough to tell that they are two piece until it’s giving you problems. The ones I had issue with first were OEM chrysler lugnuts.

A perfect solution looking for a problem.

Those chrome covers on those lugs fall off all the time while I’m doing tire rotations on Encores. It’s like they’re just pressed on very gently and then fall off any time you hit them with an impact.

Yeah. They’ve been a bad idea since the beginning.
